It has been great to be able to record and soon release CD "From Shadows to Light" with the wonderful pianist Per Rundberg and a great opportunity to explore what it is to be an "Outsider" through our imminent tour and collaboration with St Martin's, Norwich and St Mungo's London.

World Homeless Day 10th of October

I am so honoured that the Sheriff of Norwich and CEO of St Martins Housing Trust, Dr Jan Sheldon, will be speaking about her work at our Norwich concert and discussion. The Trust recently celebrated its 50th anniversary.  Here are her inspiring responses in a mini interview of 60 seconds:

  1. From your perspective at St Martins how effectively do you think the homelessness crisis is currently being handled? We know that across England the number of people sleeping rough has increased by 26% (source annual street count data), however in Norwich the number of people sleeping rough has decreased by 30%. We attribute this to the way in which the City Council focus their funds and efforts on reducing rough sleeping, partnership working across the City and the support St Martins receives from local businesses, faith groups and local people. Other areas could learn a lot from Norwich.
  2. From your perspective at St Martins, what further steps (if any)  need to be taken by  government bodies? If we are to end rough sleeping we need more social housing (current research advises we need 90,000 new social homes, every year for the next 10 years). There also needs to be sufficient funding and political will.
  3. What is the most challenging part of your work Seeing people struggle with poor mental health and knowing that there are insufficient resources in Norfolk to provide the support that would make a difference, keep them well and stop them ending up on the streets.

AND /OR

What is the most enjoyable part of your work? Seeing the people we support move into their own homes is fantastic. I also enjoy talking to groups about the work of St Martins.

I am also delighted to be collaborating with Emma Louise Lane who led St Mungo's Creative Writing and her group for our London event.

Egon Wellesz was detained as an illegal alien on the Isle of Man during World War II where his mental health suffered greatly. As a refugee he was helped by Ralph Vaughan Williams and was offered a teaching position at Oxford University.

His Sonata no.2 for violin solo is said to resemble Edvard Munch's painting "The Scream" due to its atonal intervals. This is an excerpt from the 3rd movement.
